Close Enough

“Daddy, what color is your hair?”

“What color? … Dirty blonde, I guess. Why?”

“Dirty blonde? Doesn’t Mommy make you wash it?”

“Ummm.”

“I’m drawing a picture of me and you and Mommy and
Chris. And Uncle Johnny too, but I don’t have a
crayon that says Dirty Blonde.”

“Oh … well”

“I used black for Mommy and Uncle Johnny. And I used
yellow for me and Chris ‘cause Mommy said to use
yellow. But I don’t think we have yellow hair. But
Mommy said that it was close enough. So, what’s close
enough to Dirty blonde?”

“Umm … I guess, brown.”

“Okay. Mommy said I could just leave you with no hair
because that might happen soon enough but I don’t want
you to not have any hair.”

“Mommy said that, did she?”

“Umm hmm and then she laughed.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, Sweetie.”

“How come Mommy didn’t marry Uncle Johnny?”

“Didn’t … what?”

“Mommy should’ve married Uncle Johnny cause they both
have black hair. Well, Uncle Johnny’s is blacker but
they’re almost the same.”

“Two people don’t get married because they have the
same hair color, Jen. They get married because they
fall in love.”

“Oh. So is Uncle Johnny gonna marry that lady,
Denise?”

“I don’t think so, Honey. Why do you ask?”

“’Cause I heard him tell you he loves her body.”

“Umm. Well .… he does like her but I don’t think he’s
going to marry her.”

“But he said he loves her?”

“He does, I guess. Just not in the way to get
married.”

“But you said two that people that fall in love get
married and …”

“Say how’s that picture coming along? You’re doing a
great job.”

“I’m gonna put a red truck over here.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“I have to use plain ole red ‘cause I don’t have a
fire engine red. Is that close enough?

“Yes, that’s close enough.”
