The Unspoken Question

“Well, did you ask her?”

“Well, yeah, yeah.  I guess.”

“You ‘kinda’ did or….didn’t?

“Well, it’s not that easy, man.  I never thought it would be this hard.”

“You didn’t ask her, did you?”

“No.”

“What are you waiting for?”

“Well, I’m just looking for the right moment.  And, and it hasn’t come yet, okay?”

His mouth turned upward, “Yeah, right.”

“What do you mean, ‘yeah right’?  Hun?  It’s just not that easy!”

“You were all set days ago.”

“Well, maybe I just need more time.”

“More time?  You’re not sure?”

“Sure, I’m sure!  I just, well, I just….ah heck, I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“Will you quit repeating everything I say?”

“Sorry.”

“Well, I guess I’m just nervous, is all.”

“Nervous?”

His eyes narrowed in annoyance, “Yes.”

“About what?”

He paused, uncertainty blanketing his voice. “What if she says ‘no’?”

“You’ve been rejected before, lots of times.”

“It’s not the same and you know it. This isn’t a date we’re talking about.”  He shifted uncomfortably, his face becoming serious.  “I didn’t love the others.”

“Do you love her?”

He nodded without hesitation.

“Then don’t wait, because you’ll never be one-hundred percent sure.  Ask anyone, if they’re honest, they will tell you the same thing.  Don’t wait.  Don’t let her go.”

His eyes grew wide, and he began shifting his feet again.  “I can’t lose her.”

“I know.”

He nodded solemnly, “I’ll be right back.”

“Good luck.”

He looked back, the thin line of his mouth breaking into a wide grin, “Thanks.”
